Dad life does not come with a manual. Most of it is small moments: the ride to school, the question at bedtime, the quiet minute in the kitchen. Those moments are the real work.
Show up, even when you are tired
Kids do not need a perfect dad. They need one who is there. You do not have to say the right thing. You just have to be in the room and listening.
Say it out loud
Tell your kids you are proud of them. Say it for effort, not just wins. Many of us grew up hearing it rarely, and it still matters as adults.
Say sorry when you get it wrong
You will lose your temper at some point. When you do, go back and say sorry. It teaches your child more than being right ever could.
Five small things to try this week
- Put the phone down at dinner.
- Ask one real question and listen to the whole answer.
- Do something they love, even if you do not.
- Write a short note and leave it where they will find it.
- Pray for them by name.
You are doing better than you think
If you are reading this, you care. That already says a lot. Keep going, dad.
