My grandma grew up in Milwaukee in the same years Bob Uecker was growing up to be Bob Uecker. I am from Wisconsin. I live in California now, I love the beach, but my heart never left. If you ask me where I am from I will tell you Wisconsin first, even if you have never heard of the place. That is fine with me. I know where home is.
So when the Milwaukee Brewers won their first World Series on October 28, 2026, I did not just think about the baseball. I thought about Ueck.
Who he was to Milwaukee
Bob Uecker called Brewers games on the radio for 54 seasons. Before that he was a big league catcher who joked that he was not very good at it. He turned that honesty into a whole career: movies, television, commercials, and a spot in the Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. Millions of people know him as the voice in the movie Major League. People in Wisconsin know him as the guy who made a Tuesday night in a bad season feel like a party. He passed away in January 2025 at age 90.
He never needed to be the best. He needed to be himself and love the people listening. Wisconsin loved him back for it.
Uecker was in the clubhouse
You could feel him in every part of this run. Players popped champagne bottles with his name on them. A fan at the Rays’ ballpark held a sign that said UECK, WE DID IT. Pat Murphy joked during the playoffs that they had Ueck knock a fly ball down when it hit a cable in the roof. Christian Yelich said Uecker was smiling and that he wished he could have seen it. The Uecker family put out a message before the Series thanking the fans for keeping his spirit alive.
FOX even put together a tribute that told the title story through Uecker’s own words. Fans were still talking about it the next morning.
What Uecker and Murphy have in common
Murphy told his team to think uncommonly and to stay undaunted. Uecker spent his whole life doing that, in his own way. He laughed at himself, loved his people, and never made it about him. Put those two together and you get what the Brewers did this month: a group with no big payroll that trusted each other and played loose and hard.

For anyone who left home
If you grew up somewhere and had to move away, you know the feeling. You carry it everywhere. Last night Milwaukee felt closer to me than it has in years. Thank you, Ueck. Thank you, Brewers. We did it. Go Brewers.
