Kids hear everything we say. But they believe what we do.
If I tell my child I will be there and then I show up, that teaches trust. If I say I will play after dinner and I do, that teaches that words mean something. These are small moments, but they build a foundation.
Small promises matter most
It is easy to keep the big promises, like the birthday party or the trip. The small ones are harder. Five more minutes. Let me finish this and then we will read. I will call you back. When we break these, children notice, even when they do not say so.
So I try to promise less and keep more. If I am not sure, I say, I will try. When I say I will, I mean it.
Presence is the real gift
Put the phone down at dinner. Look at them when they talk. Ask one real question about their day and listen to the whole answer. You do not need to be a perfect parent. You need to be a present one.
If you are a dad reading this, or a mom, or anyone who loves a kid, you are doing better than you think. Keep showing up. They are watching, and they are learning from you.
