Every person you admire has a long list of things that did not work. You just do not see it. What you see is the result. The truth is that failure is part of every success story, and learning to handle it well may be the most useful skill you can build.
Failure is information
When something fails, it tells you what to change. That is all. It is not a verdict on who you are. A scientist who gets an unexpected result does not quit science. They get curious. You can do the same.
Ask three questions
After a setback, take a few minutes and write answers to these.
What happened? What did I learn? What will I do differently next time?
Keep your answers short and honest. This turns a painful moment into something you can use.
Give yourself a little time
It is okay to feel disappointed. Take an evening, go for a walk, talk to someone you trust. Do not rush past the hurt. But do not camp there either. A small amount of time to feel it, then a gentle push forward, is a healthy pattern.
Stay kind to yourself
If a friend told you about the same setback, you would encourage them. Do the same for yourself. Harsh self talk does not make you better. It makes you scared to try again.
Take the next small step
After a failure, do one small thing right away. Send the email. Make the call. Fix one line. Action breaks the freeze. It reminds you that you are still in the game.
Remember who is holding you
For people of faith, there is real comfort here. “The righteous falleth seven times, and riseth up again” (Proverbs 24:16). Falling is part of the walk. Rising is the point.
Share your story
When you are further along, tell someone about the time it did not work. It helps others see that setbacks are normal, and it keeps you humble and grateful.
Try this today
Think of a past setback you are still carrying. Write down one thing it taught you. Then thank God, or thank yourself, for getting through it.
