Everyone has days when the mind goes dark. Nothing in particular is wrong, and yet everything feels heavy. I have had plenty of those days. I am not an expert. I am a dad who has learned a few things that help.
Name it without judging it
Say it plainly: I am having a hard day. No story, no blame. When you name a feeling, it gets a little smaller. Fighting it usually makes it louder.
Move your body first
Do not wait to feel better before you move. Walk around the block, stretch, step outside. Fresh air and movement change how you feel faster than thinking does. Ten minutes is enough to start.
Change what is in front of you
Your mind follows your surroundings. Open a window. Put on a song that lifts you. Wash your face. Tidy one small spot. A small change in the room can change the mood in your head.
Talk to yourself like a friend
If a friend said to you what you are saying to yourself, you would never agree. You would say, you are being too hard on yourself. So say that to you. Swap I always mess up for I had a rough day and I am still learning.
Do one small thing for someone else
Nothing pulls us out of our own head like helping someone. Send a kind text. Call your mom. Thank a coworker. It does not need to be big.
Reach out when it stays heavy
Everyone has dark days. But if the heaviness lasts for weeks, or you ever feel unsafe, please talk to a doctor, a counselor or someone you trust right away. That is strength, not weakness. In the US you can call or text 988 any time.
A bad moment is not a bad life. Feelings move like weather. Be gentle with yourself today, take one small step, and let tomorrow surprise you. You are not alone.
Phil
