People ask me how I pray, or meditate, or find peace. The honest answer is that it has changed over the years, and it is okay for yours to look different from mine.
There is no one right way
Some people kneel. Some sit cross-legged. Some walk, some sing, some write letters to God in a notebook. Some have no religion at all and simply sit by the water and go quiet. All of it counts. What matters is that you show up with an open heart.
Prayer
At its simplest, prayer is talking and then listening. Speak plainly. Say what you are afraid of, what you are thankful for, what you need. You do not need fancy words. Then stop talking for a minute and listen.
Meditation
Meditation trains attention. You pick one thing, like your breath, and keep returning to it. Each time your mind drifts and you bring it back, you are strengthening a muscle. Ten minutes a day is enough to notice a difference.
Quiet walks, music and nature
For some of us the doorway is a walk with no headphones, a song that opens the chest, or a sunrise. Do not skip these because they feel too ordinary. Ordinary is where most of life, and most of grace, happens.
Make it a rhythm, not a rule
Pick a time and keep it small. Same chair, same time, five to ten minutes. A rhythm lasts longer than a rule. If you miss a day, begin again without guilt.
Try one this week. If it feels awkward, good. You are learning. The goal is not to do it right. The goal is to come home to yourself.
