When SNAP benefits were paused, one small business in Texas decided to open its doors and its kitchen.
CHA Community Boba Tea is a locally owned cafe and restaurant with locations in Waco and Temple. On one Sunday, it offered a free meal to adults who showed a valid Texas SNAP card, and kids under 18 ate free.
Co-owner Jaja Chen said the two locations served more than 140 free meals. She said the goal was to raise awareness and give back to local families, and that access to hot, nourishing meals matters to the community.
The restaurant also runs a Pay It Forward program. Guests can chip in toward meals for others, and the donated money goes to Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry.
It is a good reminder that you do not need a big budget to make a big difference. You need a kitchen, a decision and a little heart.
