Telling someone in a hard season to be thankful can sound cruel. I know. I have been on the receiving end of it. So let me say first that gratitude does not mean pretending things are fine.
Two things can be true
You can be hurting and still be grateful for a friend who called. You can be scared and still be thankful for today’s breath. Gratitude does not erase the pain. It sits beside it and gives you something to hold.
Look for the smallest light
When life is heavy, do not look for big reasons. Look for the smallest light. A warm drink. A kind message. A song. Someone who stayed. Write down one a day. It is not about feeling happy. It is about keeping a thread.
What hard seasons teach
Many people say the seasons that broke them open also taught them what matters. Who showed up. What is enough. How strong they really were. You do not have to be glad it happened. But over time, some people find gratitude for who they became.
Let others help
Part of gratitude is receiving. If someone offers help, let them. It gives them a chance to love you.
If today is a hard one, you do not have to feel thankful. Just look for one small light. Then look for another tomorrow.
