Flying with a parent or grandparent can feel like a lot. It does not have to be. A little planning makes the whole day calmer. Here is what worked for us.
Before you go
Book a morning flight if you can. Energy is higher early, and delays pile up later in the day.
Ask for help ahead of time. Most airlines offer wheelchair or cart help through the airport, even if you only need it for the long stretches. Using it is smart, not a weakness.
Pack light. One small bag that rolls easily beats three heavy ones.
At the airport
Arrive early. Rushing is the enemy. Give yourself time to sit, sip water, and look around.
Walk the gate area. Short walks keep your legs loose before a long flight.
Keep the important stuff in one pocket. ID, boarding pass, medicine list, and a phone number. No digging.
On the flight
Get up and move when it is safe. Stretch your ankles. Drink water. Take it easy on the snacks.
When you land
Plan a slow first day. Check in, eat something good, and take a short walk. Save the big adventures for tomorrow.
Keep it fun
The point of the trip is the time together. If the plan is too full, cut something. Walks on the beach and a good meal are plenty.
Talk to your doctor before any trip if you have questions about your health. Then pick a place and start planning. You can do this, and your family will be glad you did.
