When the federal shutdown put food benefits at risk in the fall of 2025, a restaurant owner in the Cincinnati area did not wait for someone else to fix it.
Lance Sizemore owns the By Golly’s and The Works restaurants across the Tri-State area. He announced free meals for kids at all eight of his locations, and put food donation boxes in each one so neighbors could add to the pile.
He said the free meals would continue until SNAP benefits were restored. After he posted about it, people offered to help cook. He said the response grew beyond what he expected, and that it lifted his staff too.
His general manager at The Works, Melissa Long, said he wants the community to know they are there to help. Sizemore described the idea as community first, and a safe place where people can come in and enjoy their time.
No speeches and no politics. Just a full plate for a kid who might have gone without. That is how a good deed looks in real life.
