I am proud to be a dad. It is one of the best parts of my life. It has also taught me more about trying than any book I have read.
Kids watch what you do far more than what you say. That is a good reason to keep working on yourself.
Effort matters more than outcome
When a child tries something hard, the best thing you can do is notice the effort. Not just the result. I try to give myself the same grace.
If you gave it your best today, that counts, even if it did not turn out how you hoped.
Patience is a gift
Learning takes time. Mistakes are part of it. When I remember that with my family, I am a better dad. When I remember it with myself, I am a better man.
Be patient with the people you love, and with yourself.
Let them see you struggle
My kid does not need a perfect dad. He needs to see me try, miss, and try again. When he watches me handle a bad day with patience, he learns more than any lecture could teach him. Let them see the real you, and let them see you get back up.
Say sorry when you are wrong
I do not always get it right. When I lose my patience, I try to go back and say so. It is humbling. But it teaches that being wrong is not the end of the world and that a good man owns his mistakes.
Praise the effort
I try to say I saw how hard you worked more than I say you are so smart. Effort is something a kid controls. It builds the kind of confidence that lasts when things get tough.
Some days you will not feel like a good dad
I have had those days. Tired, short on patience, wishing I did better. What I try to remember is that kids do not need a perfect day. They need a dad who keeps showing up. Tomorrow is another chance to start fresh, and I am grateful for that.
Show them how to keep going
The best thing we can do for the people who look up to us is to keep going when it is hard. Work hard, be honest, and do not quit.
Whoever is watching you, they are learning from how you handle the tough days. Let them see you try.

Kids watch how we try
My kids do not remember my speeches. They remember how I handled it when things did not go well. Did I give up, or did I try again?
Trying in front of your children is one of the best lessons you can give.
Let them see the effort
Tell them about something hard you are working on. Let them see you fail and start over. It teaches them failing is normal and not final.
Say sorry when you get it wrong. That teaches more than being perfect.
Keep at it
If you are a dad, you do not need to be flawless. You need to keep showing up and keep trying.
That is what they will remember, and it is enough.
Trying in front of your kids
Kids watch more than they listen. When they see you try something new, miss, and try again, they learn that effort matters more than results. That lesson will last longer than any speech.
I want my son to see a dad who is still learning, who does not always get it right and who keeps trying.
Lessons from the hard days
I have learned to say I do not know. I have learned to apologize first when I am wrong. I have learned that patience with a kid is a decision, not a feeling. Each of these came from messing up and trying again.
Your kids do not need a perfect parent. They need a present one.
Simple ways to try together
Learn something new with your child. Cook a meal neither of you has made. Try a sport you are bad at. Laugh at your mistakes. Show them that being bad at something is the start of getting better.
These shared moments build trust and memories.
Keep at it
Whatever you are facing, keep trying where your kids can see it. They are learning how to be adults by watching you. Give them a good example, and be gentle with yourself on the days you fall short.
