Some days you want to pray and nothing comes out. You are tired, worried or just empty. If that is you today, take a breath. You are not doing it wrong. God does not grade your words. He hears your heart.
Start with one honest sentence
“God, I am here, and I do not know what to say.” That is a real prayer. It is honest, and God can work with honest. The Bible says the Spirit helps us when we do not know what to pray (Romans 8:26).
Use the words of others
Read a Psalm out loud. Psalm 23 is a good start. Let those words be your prayer. People have been doing this for thousands of years. It is not cheating. It is borrowing strength.
Try the four step pattern
Thank, sorry, please, and trust. Thank God for one thing. Say sorry for one thing. Ask Him for one thing you need. Then say, “I trust You with it.” It takes less than two minutes, and it keeps your mind from wandering.
Pray as you go
You do not need a quiet room. Pray in the car, on a walk or while you wash dishes. Short prayers throughout the day keep your heart close to God. “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) can be as simple as a whispered thank you.
Sit in silence
Sometimes the best prayer is quiet. Sit for two minutes and just be with God. Let your thoughts settle. You do not have to fill the silence.
Write it down
If your mind jumps around, write your prayers in a notebook. Looking back later, you will see how God answered, and that builds faith.
Try this today
Set a two minute timer. Say thank you for three things, tell God one worry, and end with “I trust You.” That is a complete prayer.
Keep going together
