When someone we love is hurting, we want to fix it. We search for the right words and often say nothing because we are afraid of saying the wrong thing. Here is what helps more than perfect words.
Start with presence
“I am here.” “I am not going anywhere.” Those words matter more than advice. Sit with them. Let the quiet be okay.
Ask before you fix
Try, “Do you want help figuring this out, or do you just need me to listen?” It shows respect and takes pressure off both of you.
Follow up later
The first week everyone shows up. Check in a month later. A simple text that says, “Thinking of you today,” can mean a lot.
You will not get it perfect. Love shows up anyway.
You do not need perfect words
When someone you love is struggling, many of us freeze because we fear saying the wrong thing. Perfect words do not exist. Showing up matters more.
What helps
Say something simple, like “I am here and I care about you.” Listen more than you talk. Avoid rushing to fix it or telling them it could be worse. Offer a specific help, such as dinner or a ride, instead of “let me know if you need anything.” If you are worried about their safety, encourage them to reach out to a professional or a crisis line like 988 in the US.
Make someone's day
Pass this on. One kind message can change a whole day. Then play a game that does some good.
