Turn on the news or open your phone and it feels like everyone is angry at everyone. Left against right. Neighbor against neighbor. Family members who will not sit at the same table. I keep asking myself the same question. How can a country heal if all we do is hate each other?
I am not a politician and I am not writing this to pick a side. I am writing it because I believe most people are more decent than the loudest voices make us think. Most of us want the same basic things: a safe home, good work, healthy kids, and a country our children can be proud of.
Disagreeing is normal. Contempt is a choice.
You can think someone is wrong and still treat them like a human being. Strong beliefs and kindness can live in the same person. The problem starts when we decide that people who disagree with us are stupid, evil, or beyond reach.
Most of the fighting is online
Social media rewards outrage. The angriest posts travel farthest. Real life is usually calmer. Think about the people at your work, your church, your kid’s game. Most of them are good people who want the same peace you do. Do not let a screen convince you otherwise.
Four things we can all do
Listen first. Ask someone why they believe what they believe, then listen without planning your comeback. You will not always agree, but you will understand, and understanding cools things down fast.
Find common ground. Start with what you share. Almost everyone wants safe streets, fair chances, and a better future for their kids. Build from there.
Stop sharing the fuel. Before you repost something that makes you furious, ask if it helps anyone or just spreads anger. If it is the second one, let it go.
Do something good for someone who sees things differently. Shovel a driveway. Bring a meal. Say thank you. Kindness across the line breaks the spell faster than any argument.
Healing starts small
A country does not heal from the top down. It heals one table, one neighborhood, one conversation at a time. If every one of us decided to be the calm one in the room, things would change faster than we think.
I would love to see a leader who stands up and says, enough of this, let us work it out. Until then, we can be that leader in our own lives. It costs nothing and it is the most patriotic thing I can think of.
So here is my ask. Pick one person you have been avoiding because of what they believe. Reach out this week. Say hello. Ask how they are doing. That is how it starts. Let us do this together. Make someone’s day and join the Positive Phil list if you want to be part of it.
