It is easy to look at someone else’s life and feel behind. Their success, their house, their following. We only see the highlight reel, and we compare it to our messy middle.
I have done this more than I want to admit. It never helped me once.
You are seeing the end, not the start
Every person who looks like they have it all together started somewhere. They had doubts, failures, and slow years. You just did not see those parts.
Where you are today is one chapter. It is not the whole book.
Compare yourself to yesterday
The only fair comparison is you today against you last month. Are you a little wiser, a little kinder, a little more disciplined? Then you are winning.
Keep a record of your progress. When doubt creeps in, look back at how far you have come.
Social media is a highlight reel
Most of what you see online is a small slice of someone’s life. You do not see the doubt, the bills or the bad days. Comparing your whole story to their highlights is not a fair fight. Remember that when you scroll.
Ask what you can learn
When someone is ahead of you, get curious instead of discouraged. What did they do that you can try? Can you ask them? Most people who got somewhere are glad to share how. Their path is a lesson, not a verdict on you.
Run your own race
Your timing is not late. Your path does not have to look like anyone else’s. Do your next right thing today and let the rest take care of itself. God is not behind schedule on you.
Remember what you have already done
Take a minute to list what you have gotten through in the last few years. Hard things, yes, and good things too. You are further than you think. Chapter Twenty looks easy from the outside because you cannot see the nineteen before it. Yours is being written right now.
Celebrate other people
When someone else succeeds, cheer for them. It does not take anything away from you. There is room for everyone to win.
Keep your eyes on your own road. Do your part well, and trust that your time is coming.

You only see their finished chapter
When you compare yourself to someone far ahead, you are looking at years of work you did not see. They had messy first chapters too.
Your first chapter is allowed to be rough.
Compare to yesterday
The only fair comparison is you versus you. Are you a bit better, wiser or kinder than last year? That is the scoreboard that matters.
Write down three ways you have grown. You may be surprised.
Be glad for others
When someone else wins, cheer for them. It frees you from jealousy and often opens doors.
Write your own story, one page at a time.
Why we compare
We compare because we want to know where we stand. The problem is that we compare unfairly. We see the finished results of other people’s lives, but we only see the messy middle of our own.
It is like comparing the first page of a book you are writing to the last page of a finished novel.
What chapter are you in
Chapter one looks like confusion, small steps and mistakes. Chapter twenty looks like skill, confidence and results. Everyone starts at chapter one. Everyone.
The person you admire probably has stories you would not guess. They have failed, started over and doubted themselves. They just kept writing.
A better way to measure
Ask three questions each month. What did I learn? Who did I help? What small step did I take? These do not depend on anyone else’s life. They only depend on yours.
Be glad for others
When someone else gets what you want, cheer for them. It does not take anything away from you. It keeps your heart free, and it often opens doors. Write your chapter well. Your readers are coming.
