Life is short. Anyone who has lost someone knows it. One day you are talking, the next day you are planning a service. It does not feel fair.
When I hear about innocent people being hurt, my heart breaks. It makes me angry. It should. Every life matters, and no one has the right to take another person’s life or their peace.
Justice matters
People who hurt others should be held to account. We need good laws, good police, and good courts. We should support the people who protect us, and the people who help victims heal.
But hate does not heal us
Anger can burn out of control. If we let it, it will turn us into someone we do not want to be. The best answer to cruelty is to become a stronger, kinder person. Protect your home. Look after your neighbors. Teach your kids to value every life.
What we can do
- Pray for the families who are grieving.
- Check on a neighbor.
- Teach young people that they matter.
- Mentor a kid who needs someone.
- Vote, volunteer and speak up for safe communities.
Choose the long view
One day we will all be gone. What do we want to leave behind? Not anger. Love. Stories. People who are better off because we passed through.
Life is too short for hate. It is just long enough to do some real good. Let us get started.
