Most of us have started a habit and dropped it. That does not mean you lack willpower. It usually means the habit was too big or had no clear place in your day. Here is a simple way to make habits stick.
Start tiny
Make the habit so small that it feels almost silly. Two push ups. One page. One minute of prayer. A tiny habit is easier to repeat, and repeating is what builds the habit.
Attach it to something you already do
After you pour coffee, you read one verse. After you brush your teeth, you stretch. Anchoring a new habit to an existing one removes the need to remember.
Make it easy
Set out what you need. Shoes by the door, a Bible on the table, a notebook by the bed. Remove small obstacles.
Track it
Mark an X on a calendar each time you do it. A chain of Xs is motivating. If you miss a day, do not miss two.
Celebrate quickly
After you do it, smile, say “nice work,” or give yourself a small fist pump. Positive feelings help your brain want to do it again.
Grow slowly
After a few weeks, add a little. Two push ups become five. One page becomes two. Slow and steady wins.
Try this today
Pick one tiny habit and attach it to something you do every day. Start tomorrow morning.
