Hi, I’m Positive Phil. Grab a coffee and sit with me for a minute. This is the note I wish someone had handed me on a slow morning years ago.
Most mornings start slow. The to-do list is long and your head is already ahead of you. That is normal. What helps me is one small thing. I stop, breathe, and say that good things are ahead. Then I take the next step.
Why I Say It Every Morning
Words shape how we think. If the first thing you tell yourself each day is, “This is going to be hard,” then your mind goes looking for proof. It finds it, too. The traffic, the email, the bill, the headline.
If the first thing you say is, “Good things are ahead,” your mind goes looking for that instead. It will not erase the hard parts of the day. But it changes what you notice, and what you notice changes how you feel.
It sounds almost too simple. I thought so too. Then I tried it for thirty days and the difference surprised me. I was calmer. I was kinder to the people around me. I stopped dreading Mondays so much.
You Do Not Need a Big Plan Today
A lot of us carry a quiet pressure to have everything figured out. The five year plan, the perfect routine, the ideal version of ourselves. That pressure can freeze you in place.
Here is a gentler way. Pick one thing you can finish today. Do it well. Be kind to someone. That counts, and it is enough for a day.
Big changes are usually the result of lots of small, ordinary days stacked together. A good day is not a miracle. It is a few small choices made with care.
A Simple Morning You Can Try
If you want a starting point, here is how I like to begin the day. It takes about ten minutes and you can adjust it to fit your life.
- Sit down before you scroll. Give yourself a few minutes before the phone takes over.
- Take three slow breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth.
- Say it out loud. “Good things are ahead.” You can whisper it if the house is asleep.
- Name three things you are thankful for. The coffee in your hand counts.
- Pick your one thing. Decide what matters most and say it plainly.
- Say a prayer or a quiet thank you. I thank God for another day and ask for help being a good man in it.
That is all. If you only have two minutes, do the first three steps. Even a short start beats no start.
Progress Matters, Even the Small Kind
I talk about this a lot because I believe it. Small progress is still progress. A walk you did not feel like taking. A hard phone call you finally made. An apology you gave. A glass of water instead of another soda.
When you only count the big wins, you miss most of your life. Learn to notice the small ones. Write them down if it helps. At the end of the week, you will have a list that proves you moved forward.
When the Day Is Heavy
Some mornings, saying that good things are ahead feels like a stretch. Maybe you got bad news. Maybe you are tired, or worried, or grieving. I know that feeling and I am not going to tell you to smile and pretend.
On those days, try this instead. Say, “I do not see it yet, but I choose to believe it.” That is honest, and it still points you in the right direction.
Then do the next small thing and ask for help if you need it. Call a friend. Talk to your family. Reach out to someone you trust. You were not made to carry everything alone.
Gratitude Makes Coffee Taste Better
I am not exaggerating. There is something about slowing down and being thankful that makes ordinary things richer. A warm mug. A quiet kitchen. The sound of someone you love waking up in the next room.
I never want to be so busy chasing the future that I miss the good thing sitting in front of me. If you want a simple habit that changes your days, start with gratitude. It costs nothing and it pays back every single day.
Share It With Somebody
Encouragement is meant to be passed along. Today, send a short message to one person. Tell them something good and true about them. Or tell them, “Good things are ahead for you.”
You never know who needs to hear it. Someone in your life may be having a rough week and quietly wondering if anyone notices. Your note could be the lift they need.
What I Am Holding On To This Week
- Progress matters, even the small kind.
- Gratitude changes how the day feels.
- Showing up beats waiting until you feel ready.
- Kindness is never wasted.
- Rest is part of the work.
Pick one of those and carry it with you today. Write it on a sticky note and put it on your mirror or your dashboard.
Keep Going
If today is heavy, that is okay. Keep going. Good things are ahead, and I am cheering for you. You are not behind, and you are not alone. You are right where you need to be to take the next small step.
Come back tomorrow. I will be here with another short note. And the Positive Phil podcast is always there when you want something to listen to on the way to work, on a walk, or while you sip your morning coffee.
Let’s go. We are building this together.
Phil
