The rule that fixed half my bad days
I am not a doctor. I am a fifty year old dad who has had a lot of bad afternoons. And a few years ago I noticed something embarrassing. Most of my bad afternoons started around the same time, and most of them came after a morning where I drank coffee, skipped breakfast, and forgot water existed.
So I made a rule for myself. Before I decide that I am stressed, angry, behind, or hopeless, I drink a full glass of water. Then I eat something real. Then, and only then, I am allowed to decide how bad things are.
You would not believe how often the problem shrinks. The email is still there. The bill is still there. But the feeling that the walls are closing in is gone, or at least smaller. Turns out a lot of what I called a crisis was a body asking for basic care.
Why this works
Again, not a doctor. But I know what I feel. When I am dry and empty, everything looks worse. My patience is short. My thinking is foggy. Small things feel huge. When I take care of the basics first, my brain gets a fair shot at the actual problem.
It is also a pause. The glass of water takes a minute. The sandwich takes ten. That little gap between the feeling and the decision is where a lot of dumb choices die before they get made. I have sent fewer bad texts since I started this. I have snapped at my kids less. I have made better calls at work.
The seven day plan
Here is a challenge. Seven days. Simple enough that you cannot fail it unless you decide to.
Day one, put a glass of water next to your bed tonight. Drink it before your feet hit the floor in the morning. That is the whole day. Just that.
Day two, do the morning glass again, and this time notice the first moment in the day when you feel stressed. Do not fix it. Just drink water first and see what happens to the feeling.
Day three, add food. If you skip breakfast, eat something small. An egg, a banana, toast. Nothing fancy. Water, then food, then decide.
Day four, carry a bottle. Keep it where you can see it. Every time you look at your phone, take a sip. You look at your phone more than you think, so you will drink more than you think.
Day five, pay attention to the afternoon. For me it is around three. Find your hour. When it hits, water and a snack before you make any big judgment about your life.
Day six, tell somebody about the rule. Your spouse, a coworker, a kid. Saying it out loud makes it real, and they might start doing it too.
Day seven, look back. Were there fewer blowups? Fewer moments where you felt like quitting? Did anything feel smaller than it would have a week ago? Write down one honest sentence about it.
What I am not saying
I am not saying water solves everything. Real problems are real. Grief is real. Money trouble is real. Illness is real. If you are struggling with something heavy, please talk to somebody who can actually help.
What I am saying is that we should not fight a real problem with an empty tank. You would not drive across the desert with the gas light on. Do not take on your hardest day without the basics. Give yourself the best shot.

Gratitude Stack
Build a tower out of thank yous.
Go fill a glass. Put it by the bed. That is day one and you are already done. Tomorrow morning, drink it before you check anything. Before the phone, before the news, before the list.
Then take on the day. You will still have problems. But you will meet them with a clearer head and a steadier hand, and that changes more than you would guess.
Before you decide you are overwhelmed, drink the water and eat something. Then decide.
