Sendgrid Co-Founder & Entrepreneur Isaac Saldana is on the Positive Phil Podcast

SendGrid recently closed a $33 million Series D funding round and now boasts more than 350 employees and a brand new, state-of-the-art office in downtown Denver. However, SendGrid’s humble origins stem from three passionate founders, Isaac Saldana, Tim Jenkins, and Jose Lopez, who set out to solve the problem of email deliverability in 2009. I had the opportunity to sit down with Isaac Saldana, one of SendGrid’s three co-founders, and the first CEO of the company, to discuss how the business was started. During our in-depth conversation, we discussed Isaac’s past as an entrepreneur, his motivations for starting SendGrid, finding initial product-market fit and the keys to SendGrid’s ultimate success. The story and glimpse into Saldana’s mindset that follows are sure to be invaluable for aspiring entrepreneurs and seasoned professionals alike. Before There Was SendGrid… For such a successful founder, Saldana is extraordinarily humble and attributes much of his success to luck. “This thing is hard and it’s not going to be given, but consider that a lot of it is luck and just part of the process. So, if you never create a successful startup, it doesn’t mean anything. It just means you didn’t get as lucky as the other person.” Isaac Saldana While luck was certainly part of the equation, Saldana’s goal was to objectively identify why SendGrid’s founders were able to succeed in spite of the unfavorable odds facing startups. For Saldana, curiosity and persistence were instrumental in identifying a challenging, widespread problem and forming the right team to build a solution. Consider that SendGrid was Saldana’s fourth startup. To put that into perspective, Saldana had worked on “failed” startups for six years before even beginning on SendGrid, which doesn’t sound lucky in hindsight. While all of those businesses failed from a financial standpoint, they provided invaluable experience that would lead to SendGrid’s success for a number of reasons. Saldana developed meaningful working relationships in running startups with SendGrid co-founder Jose Lopez and SendGrid’s 5th employee, Elmer Thomas. Saldana, Lopez, and Thomas learned from mistakes they had made in previous businesses. Saldana encountered a recurring pain point of email deliverability in all of his previous startups, which would eventually drive him to found SendGrid. from www.sendgrid.com POSITIVE PHIL IS AN ENTREPRENEUR , PROFESSIONAL PODCASTER AND SOCIAL INFLUENCER. As musicians, they had no idea what they were getting in to; no member of the band had ever picked up a video camera, and Oliver thought video cameras were a type of teleportation device! But, they started slowly and worked really hard.  After two years they have accumulated hours of footage addressing countless lessons (Oliver is just about always up to something)! They consider this footage the pilot season of Hoot Quarters - a show named after the tree house The Hoots built and Oliver now calls home.   In the show, children are invited to join The Hoots as they teach simple lessons about music, education, and healthy living – all while demonstrating the powerful influence of friendship.  Episodes are shot in the same style as their music: to be enjoyable to the young and older. The video production style is intentionally quaint and retro. This is partly due to budget (they are 100% self-funded and could not afford Hollywood-like production quality even if they wanted to), but also because The Hoots want their audience to know who they really are.  A slightly vintage aesthetic matches their personality better than any Hi-Def. blockbuster could, and hopefully feels more authentic to their viewing friends as well. The Hoots hope that the show Hoot Quarters will allow them to bring valuable lessons and fun music into the homes and lives of families across the globe.  Join them for their pilot season soon! After spending just a little time with Oliver, two things became abundantly clear to The Hoots: 1) he is extremely lovable, and 2) he has some rather curious views. Specifically, he  In 2012, The Hoots decided to build a new practice space and spot to hang out. They thought a tree house would be fitting, and found the perfect tree for their house at an undisclosed Sacramento park. Fortuitously (since the Hoots had named themselves after the rad sound an owl makes), there was a purple owl named Oliver T. Owl already living in the tree they chose! Oliver decided to move into The Hoots’ new tree house; it was a bit fancier than the knothole abode he had been occupying. Together, they named their tree house Hoot Quarters.   The Hoots are a band from Sacramento, California. They write and perform original music for the young and older (seriously). Their sound is fun and whimsical, and their songs include lessons that never speak down to the audience, but that listeners of all ages appreciate and enjoy.  The Hoots have sold thousands of albums and have received international acclaim, receiving numerous accolades including a prestigious Parent’s Choice Award.

Edward Miskie is a Cancer Survivor & author of “Cancer, Musical Theatre, and Other Chronic Illnesses” On the Positive Phil Podcast

Edward Miskie is a Cancer Survivor. He is also an actor in the Musical Theatre realm and the author of "Cancer, Musical Theatre, and Other Chronic Illnesses". Having always known he wanted to give back to those who supported him, not only throughout the course of his lifetime, but his course of treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the idea, and concept for this book didn't take flight until four years after he was declared 'cancer free.' A chance encounter with a fellow survivor changed everything, and Edward soon thereafter took to his laptop and began forming the as-funny-as-cancer-can-be memoir. This book touches on the farce that is cancer treatment, the circus that is the healthcare system we face, and the challenges that face you even after you are told you are cancer free all framed in the content of musicals. It is currently published in hard copy and on Kindle and Amazon. Originally, Edward identified this piece as a self-help book for cancer patients, survivors, and those closely associated with the two. Since then, it has morphed into what he refers to as 'the ugly truth' behind cancer. Through the indecencies, heartbreaks, triumphs, and shenanigans, he hopes the reader can find some form of peace in knowing that it's okay to feel the way they do, and they are not alone. Visit www.cancermusicaltheatrebook.com, or follow @CMTBook for more information. WaterAid CEO Sarina Prabasi ” Women of Influence” is On The Podcast

Prabasi was appointed Chief Executive of WaterAid America in May 2014. Over the course of the last year, the organization worked with local partners to reach two million people with clean water, three million people with toilets and sanitation, and over eight million people with hygiene education. Under Sarina’s leadership, WaterAid has been recognized by GuideStar’sPhilanthropedia as the number one ranked international water and sanitation nonprofit. In addition to her work at WaterAid, Prabasi and her husband Elias Gurmu co-founded Buunni Coffee in 2011, and opened Café Buunni in 2012, NYC’s first Ethiopian coffee shop, located in Washington Heights. The growing company blends Prabasi’s strong social sector experience with Gurmu’s entrepreneurial track record and is launching its second New York City location this year. Prabasi was also recently named by both Fortune and Food & Wine magazines as one of the ‘Most Innovative Women in Food & Drink’. She was recognized, in part, because of her reputation as a trailblazer and mentor for women interested in pursuing top leadership positions while also balancing busy family lives. A proud mother of two young girls, Sarina has been praised for providing exceptional support and encouragement to the nearly 25% of WaterAid staff in the US who similarly have young children at home. “Sarina’s excellence in the nonprofit sphere is matched only by her unparalleled understanding of how businesses and nonprofits can form a powerful force for good in New York City—and far beyond,” said Dan Singer, North America President for EMU Australia. “EMU is proud to have teamed up with WaterAid to achieve a world where everyone, everywhere has clean water, toilets and hygiene, and we congratulate Sarina on being recognized among so many other influential New York leaders.” www.wateraidamerica.org/ Award Winning Podcast where Positive Phil chats with today's most inspiring Thought Leaders, Pioneering Spirits. and Entrepreneurs 365 days a year. Singing Portraits App was inspired by Jason Paris, a dad, a musician, music producer & IT professional

Inspired by Jason Paris, a dad, a musician, music producer and IT professional when his daughter Abbie turned three years old. Akin to a handmade card or a portrait, they set out to make a unique gift for her Nanna's 64th birthday. With no proper basics on singing, three-year-old Abbie sang the first singing portrait, which was aptly When I’m Sixty Four.  On Nanna’s birthday, Abbie’s song track did not fail to deliver; there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. To hear the first singing portrait starring Abbie at soundcloud click here. Since then, Jason Paris decided to produce a mobile app for both Android and iOS for other families to who wish to create a memorable and heartfelt song chronicles of their children growing up. Singing Portraits is committed to helping families and educators create memorable keepsakes for loved ones. Pitch: Most parents will agree the most meaningful gifts from their children are the simple ones. It’s any shared experience: a child’s face upon discovering something new, it’s the first ball caught, the first cupcake frosted, the carefully drawn picture of an otherwise normal day, now exalted, that will hang on your refrigerator for years to come. It’s those experiences and shared gifts of expression that create the most meaningful family memories. It is also the impetus behind creating Singing Portraits, developed by a dad, a musician and music teacher after he and his 3 year old daughter set out to create something special for her Nanna’s birthday. They produced a song, starring young Abbie and on Nanna’s birthday, it left no eye dry in the room. Inspired by the response, Singing Portraits was developed as an easy-to-use, virtual music studio, designed for young children to sing, record and send a personal musical greeting cards to their loved ones. Perfect for the dad or grandfather that has everything, except maybe more quality time. It takes only minutes. Once your keepsake is recorded it can be emailed or posted on social media for loved ones. Unlike Karaoke, if you’re not happy with a verse, just re-record it. With a click on the app, compile your child’s song and email it to be shared it with friends and family. According to Singing Portraits founder, Jason Paris, “As a former music teacher, the app is also a great way to build confidence in children. I’m not sure what’s most special? Watching the families touching response to their child’s song or witnessing the child’s excitement and self worth soar.” Leigh Madrid, mom, and publisher of Speculative 66 says, "LARF! Our daughters, Elora and Izzy love this app. They recorded songs for their grandparents and for my brother who is stationed overseas and had such a wonderful time. The best part was when Elora began ignoring the prompts to sing Katy Perry instead. We were going to wait to send them out for Mother's Day and Father’s Day but we just couldn't help but share them early." Singing Portraits features songs for birthdays, holidays, kids pop, and nursery rhymes. The app is available at iTunes on iOS for iPhone and iPad (8.0 or later) or Andoid at Googleplay. The first song is free, $1.99 unlocks access to all the songs.
